Tips & Tricks : Windows 10 & Windows Server 2016 reset on VMware ESX 6

-

Here is one from friend of mine, very skilled Senior IT Engineer, Tomasz Jagiello. Some bugs he identified while working with VMware ESX 6.

Symptoms

VM running Windows 10 (x64) as the Guest OS is automatically reset after some hours (roughly a day). Reoccurs daily.

The thread said it also applied to Windows Server 2016 VMs.

There is an unrecoverable error that cause the VMkernel to shut down / restart / crash the virtual machine.

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) NOT_REACHED bora/devices/ahci/ahci_user.c:1530

Check if you’re using a para-virtual SATA adapter in the settings of the VM.

Cause

There is a VMware bug where if the SATA adapter receives SMART communications on a non-SMART device the CPU bus locks up and ESX reboots the VM.

I was using SCSI for the VM disks and SATA for the VM CD-ROM.

Workaround

  1. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Remove CD/ROM
    • OK
  2. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Remove SATA Controller
    • OK
  3. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Add CD/ROM
    • Change to IDE
    • Remove SATA Controller
    • OK

How-to : Package virtual machine for Riverbed Steelhead with RSP

-

RSP platform installed on Riverbed allows to run VMware virtual machines on it. THat gives very powerful environment as Riverbed might become the only appliance deployed for branch office and with WAN optimization we can also provide basic services/systems to site. That gives us huge flexibility and same time no need to deploy additional systems for site can be placed on Riverbed as virtual machines. Of course that reuires special license and also additional RAM would be recommended, so we won’t suffer performance issues (additional memory can be purchased with Riverbed appliance and RSP license, so we get ready to go environment).

But it is not enough to create VMware cityual machine on PC and upload it to Riverbed. Few more steps is involved in the process and here we will go through all steps to see how to prepare virtual machine for Riverbed on Windows 7 PC with VMware Workstation 9 installed.

How-to : Running Cisco Nexus 1000 as virtual machine on vSphere Hypervisor ESXi 5

-

In one of the previous articles I did quick overview How-to Install vSphere Hypervisor ESXi 5 on VMware Workstation 9. One of the reasons I did that in my Lab environment was to run Cisco Nexus 1000v with NX-OS on it and evaluate this operating system and how it can integrate with other products. So, here is quick overview how to make Cisco Nexus 1000v happen on vSphere ESXi.

How-to : Installing ESXi 5 on VMware Workstation 9

-

VMware Wosktation allows to run ESXi as virtual machine (virtual environment as virtual machine Рkind of funny). It can be very useful to evaluate, experiment and learn vSphere at home. This can be also very helpful if we want ot run virtual appliances which are compatible with ESX only. I will show how easy is to install ESXi 5 as virtual machine on VMware Workstation 9.

How-to : VMware Workstation 8 and GNS3 integration

-

VMware Workstation and GNS3 are two platforms which are very handy to test and evaluate solutions before live implementation. By default each of those platforms is separate, however both have components which allow integration. What that means is that it is possible to have virtual machines hosted on VMware Workstation to communicate with Cisco equipment which is running oin GNS3.

By default VMware Workstation has 10 virtual networks which are named VMnet0, VMnet1, … , VMnet9. Each of those networks can be used as:

  • Bridged – virtual network connected seamless way to physical adapter. Virtual machines connected to bridged network will appear in same network as physical adapter connected to computer.
  • NAT – VMware will translate virtual network and computers connected to that network and allow communication acting as gateway
  • Host-only – network available only for virtual machines connected to it. private network for virtual machines.

Configuration of virtual networks is flexible and can be adjusted easily. Each of virtual networks can be also presented on host computer as network adapter.

In GNS3 environment we have Cloud Node Type which can be configured to communicate with any network adapter installed on the computer on which GNS3 is running
