How-To : Promote Windows Server 2012 Core to first Domain Controller in Forest

-

In order to create new Forest and promote Windows Server 2012 Core to be Domain Controller for that Forest, first Active Directory Services Role has to be added:

Install-WindowsFeature AD-Domain-Services –IncludeManagementTools

Once Active Directory DOmain Services role is installed we can promote server to be first Domain Controller in the Forest.

Install-ADDSForest -DomainName "lab.corp" -DomainNetbiosName "LAB" -DomainMode Win2008R2 -ForestMode Win2008R2 -InstallDns -Force

And after some time new Forest and Domain Controller is ready to use.

Tips & Tricks : Windows 10 & Windows Server 2016 reset on VMware ESX 6

-

Here is one from friend of mine, very skilled Senior IT Engineer, Tomasz Jagiello. Some bugs he identified while working with VMware ESX 6.

Symptoms

VM running Windows 10 (x64) as the Guest OS is automatically reset after some hours (roughly a day). Reoccurs daily.

The thread said it also applied to Windows Server 2016 VMs.

There is an unrecoverable error that cause the VMkernel to shut down / restart / crash the virtual machine.

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) NOT_REACHED bora/devices/ahci/ahci_user.c:1530

Check if you’re using a para-virtual SATA adapter in the settings of the VM.

Cause

There is a VMware bug where if the SATA adapter receives SMART communications on a non-SMART device the CPU bus locks up and ESX reboots the VM.

I was using SCSI for the VM disks and SATA for the VM CD-ROM.

Workaround

  1. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Remove CD/ROM
    • OK
  2. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Remove SATA Controller
    • OK
  3. Edit VM Hardware settings
    • Add CD/ROM
    • Change to IDE
    • Remove SATA Controller
    • OK

Config snippets : OpenSSL for Windows can’t find openssl.cfg

-

Little issue with OpenSSL for Windows came out recently when I tried to create certificate request. Just after installation when tried to generate cert request got error message:

WARNING: can't open config file: /usr/local/ssl/openssl.cnf
Unable to load config info from /usr/local/ssl/openssl.cnf

Reason was that by default OpenSSL couldn’t find configuration file (even if it was located in same folder as excutable file).

So, to fix it just set environmental variable with information where openssl.cfg file is located:

set OPENSSL_CONF=c:\OpenSSL-Win32\bin\openssl.cfg

You can consider adding this to system environmental variables.

Tips & tricks : Detect your public IP using telnet

-

If you need to identify your public IP and have no possibility to run web browser of any kind you can use telnet.

In order to identify public IPv4:

telnet v4address.com

In order to identify public IPv6:

telnet v6address.com

Once connection is established autoresponder will show your public IP address:

This is the telnet autoresponder at v6address.com.
You have connected over IPv4.
Your IP address is 5.10.15.20

This might be helpful when using console on some *NIX systems or on the routers.
